Can Do

Can Do was established by parent/carers in 1982 previously known as ‘East Lothian Special Needs Playschemes’. The charity rebranded in 2020 becoming a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. The charity aims to reduce social isolation experienced by children and young people with disabilities in East Lothian, by offering regular access to fully supported, accessible activities that embody fun, friendship and adventure!

The charity facilitates playschemes operating across three sites: Tranent, Haddington & North Berwick during the Easter, Summer and October school holidays. Children aged 5-16 years, with a wide range of disabilities, including severe and complex health needs, are supported to enjoy a range of recreational activities in a safe, and supported environment. Can Do provide a unique opportunity for disabled children to access resources independently from their parent/carers, improving the well-being of whole family units.

In addition to the Playschemes the charity also facilitates Youth clubs twice weekly during the school term time. The clubs support young people aged 12-18years, offering regular social opportunities to make and maintain friendships in a supported environment. The youth club members are encouraged to develop independence, contributing to activity planning and preparations, and becoming more integrated in their local communities, building up resilience for adult life.
